2021 Carolina Service Award Winner:

Richard Warren
We are so proud to be Region 15 members because we have so many wonderful people who give freely of their time. Speaking of giving freely, one member who always comes to mind is Richard Warren. Richard doesn't hesitate to volunteer and does more than what is needed no matter what is asked. He can always be counted on to complete the task at hand, on time and with care.
One can see why Richard is so deserving of this special award. At the Raleigh Hemerocallis Club, Richard has held various leadership roles, including President 2018-2019 and Co-Vice President 2016-2018. During those years, he interfaced with the Raleigh Parks primes to ensure the facility was available for meetings and to encourage those interested in daylilies to attend our meetings. Richard has served and is currently serving as a member of the Raleigh Hemerocallis Club nominating committee.
Currently, Richard is prime for ensuring the club Weebly website (raleighdaylily.weebly.com) is updated with the latest information. He responds to any questions submitted by the public on the site, while encouraging them to attend an upcoming meeting. In addition, Richard is a member of the Sandhills Daylily Club and maintains their website (sandhillsdaylily.weebly.com).
The Raleigh Hemerocallis Club also interfaces with the Raleigh Parks Department regarding the Jaycee Park Daylily Display Garden. Richard helps with any work sessions held to maintain the garden and his wife, Janet, joins him in these events.
During the last 13+ years, Richard has also been in various Flower Show roles including Show Chair, Clerks Chair, Judges Chair, and, during the 2021 Flower Show, Richard was given the Award of Appreciation for all his hard work in making the show a success over the years.
Richard and Janet have always helped with preparing plants for the club plant sale held as part of each year's Flower Show. Their efforts include digging, washing, labeling, and transporting plants to the show.
For one of the most memorable Raleigh Hemerocallis Club meetings, the Warrens hosted the club in their garden and home for a cookout. This meeting was a big hit with the members.
Some of you may also remember their beautiful garden, Windy Ridge, when it was on tour for the Region 15 Summer Meeting in 2017. Getting ready to be a tour garden requires tons of work, and the Warrens willingly signed up to do the work involved to have it ready. The result was a gorgeous garden overflowing with hundreds of daylily blooms highlighted by beautiful companion plants and great garden art.
Richard is also an Exhibition Judge, giving of his time to travel to and judge flower shows.
In addition to his service to the Raleigh Hemerocallis Club and Sandhills Daylily Club, Richard has served as the Region 15 Publicity Director. In this capacity, he encouraged members to vote for the Pop Poll, publicized regional events, and connected members to happenings in other clubs.
Lastly, we can't submit this without also mentioning Richard's musical talents. Some of you may remember Richard playing in his band at the Fall Meeting hosted by the Raleigh Hemerocallis Club. He and his brother have released some music and still play for various venues.
As you can see, Richard works hard for our club and region and is giving of his time. He is certainly deserving of the Carolina Service Award.

The Carolina Service Award, known as the Willard Gardner Service Award until 2004 and as the Region 15 Service Award from 2004 until 2015, is designed to recognize outstanding service to AHS Region 15. This award is currently sponsored by Mid-Carolina Daylily Society.
This award can be granted purely for service to the AHS mission in one’s local community alone; however, service elsewhere within the region or at the national level certainly adds extra weight to the nomination. Generally, it should require a variety of activities, and it should reflect service over a period of time, not just for one or two years. No award should be given or expected as a “thank you purely for holding an office. One’s leadership and impact are more important than simply holding office.”*
Any Region 15 member(s) may nominate an individual or couple who work together that he/she deems worthy of the Carolina Service Award. The nomination letter should include detailed reasons for the nomination—specific examples of why this person is worthy of the award. The letter may be sent via e-mail or the USPS to the Awards Management Chair and must arrive on or before Sept. 1. Contact information for the person making the nomination is required.
The RP, RPD, Secretary/Treasurer, and two past winners of this award will constitute the selection committee for the award. The current Board and Awards Committee members are not eligible, nor are previous recipients.
The Award will be presented at the Region 15 fall meeting by the president of the sponsoring club or the president’s designee.
